Helping Your Child at Home

General support:

Reading

Please ensure your child is reading regularly with an adult (including Year 6) and getting their three parental comments in their reading records every week. We read with your child as part of their English lessons and weekly in a small group, however we are unable to offer the quality one-to-one sessions you provide at home so we really value your support in this area.

At Blenheim we use the Read Write Inc programme to support children's early reading. Look out for advice and challenges linked to your child's weekly guided reading sessions from their teacher and please discuss these with your child. There are ideas for questions to use when reading with your child found in the front of their reading records and please encourage them to discuss the author's use of language.

Spelling

Please ensure your child practises their weekly spellings every day using the 'Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check' sheet that is sent home every Monday. Encourage them to look up definitions for any words they are unfamiliar with and if they are learning a spelling rule, can they find other words that follow this or any exceptions to the rule?

Check out the Gaming Apps for lots of spelling resources.

Learning to try at home - as featured on @Blenheim Flyers

Although not required to be completed, this is a fantastic way to explore the topics we are learning over the half term at home in a creative way! Enjoy! This is available every half term on the @Blenheim Flyers

Maths

The best way to support your child at home in Maths is to practise number bonds (quick mental addition and subtraction) and times tables - these provide a fantastic foundation for all areas of maths learning and is something practise regularly in order to keep up these skills. You may notice that your child brings home the same ones each week for a while - this is because we are supporting them to start to be able to recall these number facts rapidly and by heart without the need to count up or use fingers for counting on etc.

Any time you are able to make maths 'real' for children is brilliant - please involve them any time you are reading scales (such as weighing in cooking), using money to pay at a till, and recognising numbers around them. Children need to see that maths is not just something they do at school! Checking weights of products in shops and the capacity of certain containers is also a great way to learn concepts such as mass and measures.
